After all, her coat looks pretty good, so why bother?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grooming is not just about bows and brushes, it\u2019s an essential part of caring for your pet. Besides brushing, pet grooming also means looking after your pet\u2019s teeth, nails, eyes, ears, and coat \u2014 all of which add up to a healthy, happy, and beautiful pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health Check<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important reasons for a regular grooming routine is the opportunity to go over your pet with a fine-tooth comb, so to speak. Spending time grooming will alert you to any changes in your pet\u2019s weight, skin, or general appearance, which can indicate a health problem. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenwestvet.com\/blog\/for-the-birds-the-importance-of-avian-wellness-exams\/\">earlier you catch health concerns<\/a>, the more quickly we can identify and treat the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pet Grooming Basics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s much easier to begin a pet grooming routine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenwestvet.com\/dogs-and-cats\/pet-wellness-care-exams.html\">when your pet is young<\/a>. Gentle handling of paws, ears, body, and mouth from an early age not only acclimates them to regular grooming, it can make veterinary visits much easier and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenwestvet.com\/blog\/battling-fear-phobia-and-pet-anxiety-with-patience-and-understanding\/\">less stressful for your pet<\/a> (and for you!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having the right tools on hand also makes pet grooming a much more pleasant task. At minimum, you should have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nail trimmers<\/li><li>A selection of brushes and combs appropriate for your pet\u2019s coat<\/li><li>Grooming scissors<\/li><li>A pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste<\/li><li>Pet shampoo and conditioner<\/li><li>Ear wash and cotton<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brushing <\/strong>\u2014 The importance of regular brushing cannot be overstated. In some pets with a double coat or long fur, regular brushing can prevent uncomfortable mats. Brushing can also prevent tangles, stimulate blood flow to the skin, and rid the coat of dirt, debris, dead hair, and dander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bathing <\/strong>\u2014 Depending on your pet\u2019s species and breed, regular bathing may be a good idea. Too-frequent bathing can also strip the natural oils from your pet\u2019s coat, however. Talk to us about a good bathing regimen for your individual pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clipping <\/strong>\u2014 Some pets really need regular clipping. Curly-coated breeds, such as poodles, need clipping about every six weeks. Spaniels and other sporting dog breeds also require regular trimming. Many dogs with long hairs around their eyes, ears, and mouth can also benefit from regular trims. If your pet has red, inflamed, or swollen ears, see a veterinarian for help. Ears should be clean and odor-free. Regular ear cleaning is important to reduce odor, yeast, and bacteria, and to help your pet feel more comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tooth brushing <\/strong>\u2014 Daily tooth brushing is now recommended for cats and dogs to help prevent periodontal disease. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenwestvet.com\/blog\/say-cheese-the-importance-of-a-pet-dental-exam\/\">dental disease<\/a> affects over 85% of pets, it\u2019s important to keep up with this task.
